Sony Blocks PSN on PS5 14.00: Why 14.10 Is Forced

Sony Blocks PSN on PS5 14.00: Why 14.10 Is Forced

If your PS5 suddenly can't sign in to PlayStation Network, you're not alone. Since 15 October 2026, Sony has blocked PSN access for every PS5 on firmware 14.00 or older. Until you install firmware 14.10, you lose online multiplayer, the PlayStation Store and, for some digital games, the ability to launch them at all.

Sony's patch notes call 14.10 routine "security fixes." The timing tells a different story. It lands two weeks after a jailbreak opened up almost every PS5 ever sold, a day after news broke that Sony paid its top bug bounty, and five weeks before GTA 6. Here's what changed, how to get back online, and why we think Sony really did it.

What happened: a timeline of Sony's crackdown

    DateWhat happened
15 Oct 2026Owners on 14.00 and older report being refused PSN sign-in until they update.
14 Oct 2026News breaks that Sony paid a researcher its maximum $50,000 bounty for a critical PS5 flaw.
13 Oct 2026Byepervisor Reborn, a PS5 hypervisor exploit for firmware 13.60, gets wide coverage.
11 Oct 2026Overdrive, a piracy store listing over 1,600 PS4 and PS5 games, launches. It is pulled days later; clones appear within hours.
1 Oct 2026Firmware 14.10 ships. The changelog says only "security fixes."
29 Sep 2026The Relapse jailbreak goes public, covering firmware 7.00 to 13.60 on PS5 and PS5 Pro.
16 Sep 2026Firmware 14.00 ships and closes the browser bug Relapse relies on.

What stops working on 14.00 and older

You can still turn the console on and play disc games offline. Almost everything that needs Sony's servers is gone until you update.

    FeatureWithout 14.10
PSN sign-inBlocked; the console prompts you to update
    Online multiplayerBlocked
    PlayStation Store purchases and downloadsBlocked
Digital games that check their licence onlineSome refuse to launch
Disc games and offline single-playerStill work in most cases
Updating your consoleStill works (that's the point)

The digital games line is the one that stings. Reports say some purchased games won't start because the console can't verify the licence. Not every digital game is affected, but you can't easily tell in advance which ones are.

How to fix "can't sign in to PSN" on PS5

If your PS5 isn't jailbroken, the fix is simply to update:

    1. Go to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.
    2. Select Update System Software, then Update Using Internet.
    3. Let it install, restart, and sign in to PSN again.
    4. No internet on the console? Download the official 14.10 update file from PlayStation's website on a PC, put it on a USB drive, and choose Update from USB Drive instead.

To confirm it worked, check Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. It should read 14.10 or later.

If your PS5 is jailbroken, updating permanently removes the jailbreak. Your choice is to stay offline on your current firmware or give up the jailbreak for PSN. See our PS5 jailbreak guide before you decide anything.

Why did Sony block PSN on 14.00? Five theories

Sony hasn't said why. These are the explanations that fit the evidence, from most to least convincing.

    1. Firmware 14.00 was a rushed quick fix

This is the theory we find hardest to argue with. Firmware 14.00 arrived on 16 September and closed the WebKit browser bug that the Relapse jailbreak uses as its entry point. But a jailbreak is a chain, and 14.00 only cut the first link.

Developers behind Byepervisor Reborn, a hypervisor exploit released for 13.60, say a modified version could work on 14.00. The only thing missing is a public kernel exploit for that firmware. In other words, 14.00 shut the front door and left the windows open.

Then 14.10 arrived just 15 days later with unspecified "security fixes." Two system updates in 15 days is a fast pace for Sony. If 14.00 had really fixed the problem, there would be no reason to cut off 14.00 itself from PSN. Locking out 14.00 suggests Sony knows it isn't safe.

    2. Protecting GTA 6's launch

GTA 6 launches on 19 November 2026. It is the biggest game release in years and the most tempting target for pirates. The datamining account PlayStation Game Size reports that its release build requires firmware 14.10 or newer. Neither Sony nor Rockstar has confirmed that.

If true, the plan is clear: force everyone onto 14.10 before the game ships, so no jailbroken console can run it on day one. Some reports speculate that Rockstar and Take-Two pushed for this. There is no proof of that, but GTA 6 is too valuable for Sony to risk a launch-day leak.

To be fair to Sony, new games often need recent firmware for technical reasons, such as a newer development kit. A firmware requirement on its own doesn't prove an anti-piracy motive.

    3. The $50,000 bug bounty

On 14 October, news broke that Sony had paid its maximum $50,000 HackerOne bounty to a researcher known as Jordy, for a critical PS5 vulnerability. Reports say it was a hypervisor exploit reported in mid-September, and that Sony has fixed it. Only one other person has been paid Sony's top bounty in the last three years.

The timing lines up neatly. A critical hypervisor flaw reported in mid-September could well be among the "security fixes" in 14.10. If so, any console that hasn't installed 14.10 is still exposed. The PSN lockout makes sure that window closes for everyone who wants to play online.

The report also split the PS5 scene. Andy "TheFloW" Nguyen had asked Jordy to hold off until after GTA 6, so players could still run Linux on their consoles. When the bug was reported anyway, Nguyen said he was stepping away from PS5 development.

    4. The Overdrive piracy store

On 11 October a piracy storefront called Overdrive appeared, reportedly listing more than 1,600 PS4 and PS5 games. It disappeared days later amid claims of a Sony cease-and-desist, and copies resurfaced within hours. Sony hasn't confirmed any involvement or linked it to the PSN block. Still, a public catalogue of free PS5 games four days before the lockout won't have gone unnoticed.

    5. More control over digital games

Requiring the latest firmware for PSN is nothing new. Console makers have done it for years. What's new is how much now depends on PSN. With more of every library digital, a version check now decides whether some games you paid for will even start. That gives Sony a powerful lever, and it just showed it's willing to pull it.

The players' side: why this lockout feels unfair

Most people on 14.00 have never jailbroken anything. They just hadn't gotten around to an update. Now they're locked out of games they paid for, to solve a problem they didn't cause.

    • Paying customers are taking the hit. Pirates on jailbroken consoles were already offline. Blocking PSN mostly hurts people who were doing nothing wrong.
    • The update is one-way. Sony offers no downgrade, and the changelog doesn't say what 14.10 changes. You're asked to accept it blind.
    • "Security fixes" isn't an explanation. If an update is mandatory, players deserve to know why in plain language.
    • Your purchases depend on Sony's permission. When a firmware check can stop a game you bought from launching, "owning" a digital game starts to mean renting it.
    • Sony has done this before. In 2010, PS3 firmware 3.21 removed the "Other OS" Linux feature to stop hackers. Players who refused the update lost PSN access then too. The class action that followed ended in a settlement years later.

We understand why Sony wants to protect GTA 6 and its developers. But the fix for a security hole shouldn't be to hold everyone's library hostage until they comply. A clear explanation and an honest changelog would go a long way.

    What happens next

    • Expect another jailbreak. Every PS5 firmware so far has eventually been broken, and researchers say AI tools are speeding up the hunt. Whether 14.10 falls before GTA 6 launches is the big question.
    • Expect more forced updates. Sony has now shown it will gate PSN by firmware version. Future updates may follow the same pattern, especially around big launches.
    • GTA 6 on 19 November is the next test. If the 14.10 requirement is real, we'll know on launch day.

    PS5 PSN block FAQ

Why can't I sign in to PSN on my PS5?

If your PS5 is on firmware 14.00 or older, Sony now blocks PSN sign-in until you install 14.10. Update from Settings > System > System Software and you'll be able to sign in again.

Will Sony ban my PSN account if I don't update?

No. This is a firmware version check, not a ban. Your account is untouched, and updating restores access.

Can I play my games without updating to 14.10?

Disc games and most offline single-player games still work. Online multiplayer and the PlayStation Store don't, and some digital games won't launch because their licence can't be verified.

Can I downgrade my PS5 after installing 14.10?

No. Sony doesn't offer any way to roll back PS5 firmware.

Does firmware 14.10 remove the PS5 jailbreak?

Yes. Relapse works only up to 13.60, and reports say 14.10 also fixes the bugs behind Byepervisor Reborn. If you update a jailbroken console, the jailbreak is gone.

Will GTA 6 need firmware 14.10?

Reportedly yes, according to datamined store data. Neither Sony nor Rockstar has confirmed it. GTA 6 launches on 19 November 2026, so if you plan to play it on day one, expect to update. Our GTA VI guide covers the price, preorder bonuses and a way to win a gift card to pay for it.
