What Happens After You Win a Sweepstakes? A Step-by-Step Guide

Winning a sweepstakes draw is the easy part. What comes next has cost more than a few first-time winners their prize. Here's the full process, start to finish.

Step 1: Notification Most sweepstakes notify winners by email within 24–48 hours of the draw closing. GiftDrop winners are also announced on the Winners feed the moment the draw closes — if you're watching, you'll know before the email arrives.

Check your spam folder. Notification emails from sweepstakes operators are routinely filtered, especially if it's your first time receiving one.

Step 2: Identity verification Before any prize is released, the operator confirms your identity and that your entry was valid. This typically means responding to the notification email with your full name and the details on file for your entry.

The response window is usually 3–7 days. Miss it, and the prize may be forfeited. An alternate winner is then drawn from the remaining tickets — so someone else gets what could have been yours.

Step 3: Claiming your prize Gift card prizes are typically delivered by email — a redemption code, a link, or a PDF — after verification clears. Timelines vary: some operators send within hours, others within 7–10 business days. The Official Rules specify the maximum delivery window.

Taxes on sweepstakes winnings In the United States, sweepstakes prizes are taxable income. Operators are required to issue a 1099-MISC for prizes over $600. For prizes under $600, the obligation to report still exists on your federal return — the operator just isn't required to send the form.

Gift cards are taxed at face value. A $500 gift card is $500 of ordinary income.

What if no one responds? If the winner doesn't respond within the claim window, the prize is forfeited and an alternate winner is drawn. That alternate gets the same window and the same chance. This repeats until someone claims.

How to make sure you don't miss it Keep the email address you used to enter active and checked. Add the operator's domain to your contacts so notification emails aren't filtered. Read the Official Rules before the draw closes so the claim process isn't a surprise. None of this is complicated — it just has to happen before the clock runs out.
